The single most misunderstood fact about hardwood is that it never stops responding to its environment. Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air continuously, and as it does, it expands and contracts. A plank that measures exactly 3 inches wide in a dry Nevada winter can be noticeably wider during a humid Bay Area summer. Multiply that movement across an entire room and the difference between a floor that stays flat and one that buckles, cups, or gaps can come down to fractions of a percentage point in moisture content.

This is why professional installers don’t just show up and start nailing boards. They acclimate the wood storing it on-site, in the actual room where it will live, for days or sometimes weeks, so the material can equalize with the home’s real humidity and temperature before a single plank goes down. They also test the subfloor’s moisture content with a calibrated meter, because installing over a subfloor that’s even slightly too wet is one of the most common causes of catastrophic failure — and it’s completely invisible until the damage has already been done, often months later, well after the invoice is paid and the crew is gone.
